Activated Carbon Removal of Chlorine and Chloramine – For Drinking water treatment activated carbon

Food and beverage manufacturers have long relied on chlorine-removing activated carbon to remove chlorine and other taste and odor compounds from the water used during processing.
Reasons for removing organic and peculiar smell at the same time:
Although the removal of organic matter and odor-causing compounds is caused by the daughter-in-law phenomenon, dechlorination is triggered by a chemical reaction between activated carbon and free (HOCI) or hypochlorite ions (OCI-) existing in the water.
The dechlorination process depends on the following factors: inlet water chlorine concentration, temperature, pH, used empty bed contact time (EBCT) and the presence of dissolved organic substances, which may reduce the dechlorination efficiency of activated carbon. Usually, it takes 5-10 minutes of EBCT for chlorine removal, and 3 minutes is not enough for complete removal. The reaction between free chlorine and activated carbon is beneficial to the pH value of 5-6 (HOCI is dominant), rather than the pH value of 8-10 (OCI, which is less reactive, is dominant. Generally, the dechlorination rate at pH 5-6 is about 4 times that of pH 8-10. When the temperature is between 0-90ºC, the dechlorination rate will increase for every 20ºC increase in water temperature. Approximately doubled. After adding 1 gram of chlorine per gram of activated carbon, the removal of chlorine can be seen.

In addition to dechlorination, activated carbon also has the ability to remove a variety of organic compounds from water. The presence of low-molecular-weight dissolved organics has almost no effect on the dechlorination efficiency of a specific activated carbon, while the presence of high-molecular-weight long-chain organic compounds may have an adverse effect on the dechlorination life. Experience in activated carbon dechlorination shows that regular backwashing to remove particulate matter will have a positive impact on filtration efficiency and dechlorination efficiency. It is recommended to extend the bed to 30% when performing backwashing.

Xing’s activated carbon can provide high-quality dechlorination activated carbon. These activated carbons have been proven to be very effective for dechlorination. Colleagues who have the hardness to withstand frequent backwashing can call or email for consultation.
